PBWC Expands Board of Directors
By Joanna Rustin

PBWC is welcoming two industry veterans to the Board of Directors this Spring, including communications and branding expert Ann Barlow, partner and senior director at Peppercom Strategic Communications, and the organization’s first male director, Cliff Bell, Chief Information Officer of Phoenix Technologies.

Ann brings two decades of experience counseling executives at companies such as GE, Tyco, TIAA-CREF, Panasonic and C.R. Bard. She’s led hundreds of branding and re-branding, corporate reputation and issues-related campaigns targeted to consumers, business and government.

Ann’s career has spanned Mindstorm Communications, GCI, Berry Associates, Spector & Associates, an $800 million health system, and Waring & LaRosa public relations and advertising.

Ann sees vast potential for women to excel thanks to organizations such as PBWC. "...women are at a unique moment in time, where we have the opportunity to draw not only on our own inherent ability to communicate, problem-solve and get things done, but on technology’s ability to shrink the planet. This combination, so well embodied by organizations such as PBWC, offers women the potential to solve some of the globe’s most pressing problems if we just wield the power we’ve been given.”

She added, "...I hope to help the organization become better known among women and their employers so that more people can take advantage of all it has to offer. I also look forward to networking with and learning from its members."

Prior to joining Phoenix Technologies, Cliff Bell served as Vice President and Chief Information Officer at two Internet startup companies and held senior IT and management positions at Iomega Corporation based in Singapore, Bay Networks (now part of Nortel networks) and Apple Computer.

In his introductory letter to PBWC’s Board of Directors, Cliff shared his excitement about the potential for PBWC to foster new opportunities for our leaders: "If we hope to compete in the new economy, then it is imperative that we put the best and brightest people in the most influential and impactful positions. I think that it is time that this message of opportunity gets out to all people of the United States."

He added, "I see a great opportunity as a member of the board of PBWC. As a man, I can provide a sounding board to a unique set of sensitivities and points of view for the organization. Also, because of my technical background I can provide support in systems related areas that could help drive increased contributions to the organization."
